On June 4, 2025, President Trump signed a travel ban that will completely bar foreign nationals from 12 countries from traveling to the United States and places strict limited-travel restrictions on seven others.
The travel ban, which took effect on June 9, 2025, completely bars foreign nationals from Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from entering the United States. The ban also affects immigrant and non-immigrant B, F, M, and J-class visa holders from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. Consular officers will also likely limit the number of admissions granted with other visas.
Certain exceptions will allow nationals from the banned countries to travel to the United States. Those exempt from the travel ban include:
- Dual national citizens traveling on passport or applying for a visa from a non-banned country
- Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens who can prove a familial relationship
- Green card holders
- Athletes traveling for the World Cup and Olympic Games
- Government officials traveling for diplomatic business
- Afghan nationals operating under a special immigrant visa granted due to assistance during U.S. military presence in Afghanistan
- National interest exemptions on a case-by-case basis
Additionally, the Trump administration does not intend on revoking visas from any valid visa holders who are currently in the United States. Those who wish to continue residing in the United States are advised not to go abroad, as they will likely not be allowed re-entry.
