On July 21, 2023, the U.S. government announced a huge leap forward in modernizing the Form I-9 process. Since November 1986, employers have been required to verify the identity and employment authorization of new hires by completing Form I-9, reviewing related employee documents in-person, and confirming the documents reasonably appear to be genuine and relate to the employee.

Starting August 1, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will allow qualifying employers to review I-9 documents using a video conference as part of the employment verification process.

On July 28, Immigration partner Katie Minervino led a webinar on this development as well as the requirements for employers to perfect the inspection of documents for Forms I-9 completed under temporary COVID I-9 policies.
