Case Studies

Employee Fraud

Kroll was retained by a technology company to investigate concerns regarding the activities of certain senior employees, including allegations that falsified documents were prepared and false expense claims submitted to facilitate the provision of personal benefits to customer representatives as inducements to purchase goods and services from the company.

Our investigation included reviewing financial documents and data, collecting and analyzing electronic data such as emails and conducting interviews of selected employees and vendors. Our findings were detailed in a comprehensive report provided to counsel. As a result of our investigation, the company terminated several employees and proactively worked with its affected customers to identify the representatives involved and to determine the extent of the impact of the questionable conduct on the client’s operations.

Bid-Rigging Investigation

Kroll was retained to investigate allegations of bid rigging and receipt of gifts and inducements by an employee. Kroll conducted a fact-finding investigation to determine the extent of inappropriate activity, if any, and to identify the employees and vendors involved. The investigative procedures included:

  1. Gathering and preserving key electronic data, including extraction of relevant email accounts, imaging of selected computers and imaging of smartphone devices. Kroll’s ediscovery review tools were utilized to process and analyze relevant electronic data, and forensic analysis was conducted on selected hard drives and smartphones to retrieve deleted data. This analysis identified numerous questionable communications through
  • Conducting interviews of selected employees and vendor representatives to gather information relating to procurement transactions and the relationship between employees and vendors.
  • Conducting background research to identify connections, if any, between employees and vendors or any potential lifestyle issues.

Kroll’s multidisciplinary team included forensic accounting experts and former law enforcement professionals and cyber investigators and business intelligence specialists. Following completion of the investigation and pursuant to a settlement agreement, a senior management employee was terminated.

Sexual Harassment Investigation

Kroll conducted a sexual harassment investigation on behalf of a non-profit organization involving allegations by a volunteer against a senior manager of the organization. The investigation was conducted in accordance with relevant legislation and involved the review of email along with interviews of the complainant, alleged offender and other employees. Our investigation and report resulted in a settlement agreement and the departure of the senior manager.
