Hirschfeld Kraemer LLP Partner and Employment Law Alliance Higher Education Council Co-Chair Natasha J. Baker recently authored the Inside Higher Ed article titled, "Unmanageable Quagmire or Elegant Distinction?," exploring the U.S. National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) decision in the matter Graduate Workers of Columbia – GWC, UAW v. The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York (Case No. 02-RC-143012). In this case, the board addressed the issue the worker classification of graduate student assistants for the purposes of organizing and collective bargaining and found that these members of the university community should be classified as "employees" and, thus, are eligible to form a union under the National Labor Relations Act.
