The April 20, 2017 broadcast of the public affairs show “Insights on PBS Hawaii” put the spotlight on “Who Will Hold the Bargaining Power?,” focusing on the collective bargaining process in Hawaii. Panelists included ES&A President Anna Elento-Sneed, along with representatives of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) and of the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (UHPA), two of the bargaining units currently negotiating their respective CBAs. The panel discussed the unique environment Hawaii presents in terms of economic, political and cultural factors, as well as the challenge of so many concurrent, time-restricted negotiations. As of the live airing, 13 of 14 CBAs due for negotiation with the State of Hawaii this legislative session were still on the table.
